Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit code issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.
Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is mandatory for export/import from/to India. No person or entity can make any import or export without IEC number. DGFT has recently introduced the facility of issuing Importer Exporter Code in electronic form (e-IEC).
If there is any change in the particulars of a company, changes in directors, change of address, an application has to be made to the Director General of Foreign Trade to effect such changes in the IEC Records/Certificate. Processing of would be done online and a digitally signed e-IEC would normally be issued/ e-mailed to the applicant within 2 working days on submission of all required particulars and documents.

How it works
Importer Exporter Code (IEC or IE Code) is a registration required for persons importing or exporting goods and services from India.
Any Person, Partnership, LLP or Company doing the business of export or import is required to have IEC certificate for carrying the business of export or import of goods and services.
IE Code is the basic requirement for carrying out the business of export or import. So, no import or export can be made without Importer Exporter Code.
Business entities can avail various benefits on their exports / imports from DGFT, Customs, Export Promotion Council etc.

Yes. Copy of PAN Card of the applicant (Proprietor, Partnership, LLP or Company) is required for IEC Registration.
The applicant must have a Bank Account and should have a Cheque Book with the pre-printed name of applicant and a valid Digital Signature for submitting an IEC application.
An IEC number once allotted, shall be valid for the lifetime. There is not renewal requirements to IEC.
Changes in the Name, Constitution, Addresses and Addition of New Addresses can be added to the IEC details by filing a modification to the IEC.
IEC number can be cancelled by surrendering the same by informing the issuing authority. On receipt of such intimation, the issuing authority shall immediately cancel the same and electronically transmit it to DGFT for onward transmission to the Customs and Regional Authorities.
